The National Women’s Council say quotas are needed to increase the number of female candidates in local elections.

A new Gender Quotas Alliance has been formed, and is calling for a quota of 40 per cent in future local elections.

In June’s election, Fianna Fail had the lowest number of female candidates at 25 per cent followed by Fine Gael at 29 per cent.
