Fewer couples are having their wedding in a traditional church setting according to a new study.

The Iona Institute report shows while a Catholic church ceremony still remained the most chosen option, it’s popularity has fallen from 91 per cent in 1994 to just 34 per cent last year.

32 per cent of couples chose a civil ceremony wedding in 2023 while Church of Ireland ceremonies represented a total of 1.1 per cent of weddings last year.

The number of non traditional weddings is on the rise with 7.8 per cent of ceremonies carried out by the Spiritualist Union of Ireland in 2023.
